VOCAL FOR LOCAL

The history of the Indian toy industry stretches back to the birth of our nation itself. Manufactured all over the country, Indian toys reflect cultural diversity in the range of products manufactured. Local toys are manufactured from various raw materials such as plastic, wood, rubber, metals and textiles, with a big proportion of the businesses being SMEs. It is a labor-oriented industry based on master craftsmanship and creative designing.Traditional toys are also an important cultural asset as they depict ancient mythological stories and display the beliefs and traditions that exist among communities. Consumers are attracted to traditional toys, as they are a, means to preserve their heritage, and the craftsmen and artisans depend upon the production for their livelihood.
Handmade toys are made of simple local materials like wood, bamboo, cloth, metal sheets, wire, paper, cardboard, etc. Toymakers who live in cities and industrial areas make use of recycled waste materials such as old newspapers, discarded cartons, metal scraps, boxes and tins. Even discarded parts of machines and equipment are used very ingeniously. The use of recycled materials has no overhead cost and hence enables artisans to manufacture and sell toys at an unbelievably low price

Toycathon – A Common Service Centre (CSV) and a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Ministry of Electronics and IT teamed up with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to organise ‘Toycathon 2021’ to promote toy manufacturing among domestic players, particularly rural entrepreneurs. This is a one-of-a-kind hackathon aimed at creating indigenous toys and games that emphasise India’s culture, history, and mythology. Its goal is to encourage students, instructors, start-ups, toy specialists, and professionals to come up with new ideas and submit feasibility studies for the production of creative toys, games, and concepts locally. With over 1.2 lakh participants and 17,000 ideas, 13,900 teams have been created, with the potential to win a significant number of prizes worth up to INR 50 lakh.

TOY CLUSTER INITIATIVE

Toy Cluster Initiative – With over 4,000 micro, small, and medium firms operating across the country, 90 percent of the Indian toy sector is unorganised. The majority of toy producers are located in Delhi NCR, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and tiny clusters throughout India. To streamline the industry, the government established the ‘Product Specific Industrial Cluster Development Programme’ in 2020, with the goal of creating toy clusters in specialised SEZs and assisting them in becoming customised, self-sustaining ecosystems catering to export markets. Furthermore, the government is offering incentives at every stage of the process, from establishing a plant to enabling critical resources at reduced rates to incentivizing operating costs, all with the purpose of attracting investments and increasing export capacity.
Several state governments have responded by allocating designated sites for the construction of toy cities and park clusters. In the Koppal area of Karnataka, the state is constructing India’s first toy cluster, with the goal of housing an inclusive ecosystem of supplementary suppliers as well as industrial and social infrastructure.
With multiple government programmes, increased awareness of traditional toys, and a nationwide drive for local handicrafts, New India’s traditional toy industry is poised for unparalleled expansion. The industry is undergoing rapid development as a result of a slew of technical advancements, and it is on track to become a significant contributor to the economy in the future years. The development of the traditional toy industry is a significant step in realising the vision of a self-sufficient New India!
